Sam Stoner / Scottsville, KY Amish Made Double Rasp Survival Bowie Knife with  Elk Antler Handles and Buffalo Belt Sheath

Sam Stoner (Outback Forge) Scottsville, KY is a rarity among custom knifemakers in that he is "Old Order Mennonite" (those groups of Swiss German and south German heritage who practice a lifestyle without some elements of modern technology. They dress very plain and have retained old forms of worship, baptism and communion.)

Sam does not use any electricity or motors in his shop. All of his equipment is connected to pulleys and belts on a overhead drive shaft which is powered by two large horses walking on a treadmill. Instead of forging his blades in a gas furnace he uses a hand crank coal fired forge. (which provides for a more even and adjustable air flow). It is hard to imagine running a complete knife shop without electricity.

This  Double Rasp File "Bowie Knife" shows the traditional and personal side of Sam; features a Forge Finished super heavy duty 11 7/8" Blade, (10 5/8" cutting edge). Blade is made from a rare vintage double rasp-cut file, (which is made from 1080 Carbon Tool Steel that takes and holds an excellent edge).

The difference between a "rasps" and a regular file is the "rasps" makes deeper and coarser cuts than regular files because they have separate and triangular, rather than parallel, lines of teeth. Rasps scrape away wood rather than plane it away as files do. The rasp is well suited for shaping wood quickly. Files have gullets or spaces between the teeth that fill with wood chips.

Ancient Elk Antler Handles are uniquely colored due to age.  Super Heavy Duty Full Tang Construction. Clip Point Blade is ultra thick measuring 5/16" thick! False Top Edge measures 6 3/4" and can be sharpened if one desires.THIS IS A KNIFE!

The Blade retains that "unfinished" "Forged" finished/ Rasp File detail in the blade and a built in finger guard like traditional pieces made from a Blacksmith's forge from the 19th century. Weighs 1lb 9.5oz without the sheath. Overall length is 16 3/8". This is one of the largest and most heavy duty bowies Sam has ever offered! It is one of the sharpest we have ever seen, and you could compare it to Al Mar's Alaskan Bowie, Blackjack's Shining Mountain Bowie or Cold Steel's Trailmaster Bowie w/ Carbon V Steel.

Features a handmade leather American Buffalo/Bison sheath. The perfect piece for purists who want a blade and sheath made the early traditional way or want a Super Duty Combat/Survival knife for when the shit hits the fan; (which is going to be sooner than you think); this is a BAD ASS piece. It is not a wall hanger. Sam is a member of the ABS; (American Bladesmith Society). Highly Recommended!
