1985 Browning (Seki Japan) DAMASCUS (Model 3816) Double Edged Hunter
A Rare Masterpiece of Vintage Cutlery Artistry
For the discerning collector of vintage blades, this 1985 Browning Model 3816 "Double Edged Damascus Hunter" represents a flawless marriage of American custom design and legendary Japanese craftsmanship. Mint, unused condition, this exceptional knife is part of a highly restrictive, numbered production run of only 1,000 units ever produced worldwide.
Features a low Serial Number #0478 stamped on the polished stainless steel guard. The design of this model was featured on the the front cover of the 1988 Gun Digest Book of Knives.
The Hibben and Hattori Collaboration
The knife was designed by the legendary American custom knife maker Gil Hibben, and brought to life in Seki, Japan, where it was hand-forged by the world-renowned master bladesmith Ichiro Hattori.
Hattori’s mid-1980s Browning contracts are universally revered by collectors for their perfection in fit, finish, and tight tolerances. Holding this knife reveals the seamless transition between the handle and the metalwork, a hallmark of Hattori’s legendary workshop. Browning produced their finest knives during this time frame.
Patented Damascus Steel and Premium Materials
At the heart of this hunter is a beautifully mirror-polished, 3 5/8-inch double-edged blade that measures 7 1/2 inches overall. The steel utilizes a patented, 200-layer forge-welded Damascus process that intricately blends pure nickel with high-carbon stainless steel. This technique achieves a shimmering, high-contrast ripple pattern across the steel that remains exceptionally rust-resistant while maintaining a breathtaking luster. Complementing the striking blade is a handle carved from premium, richly grained Cocobolo wood, contoured perfectly for a secure grip.
The Complete Investment-Grade Package
Features a solid walnut wood presentation display case which features custom form-fitting lining. Crucially, the knife is accompanied by the highly coveted, original Browning paperwork—a certificate of authenticity printed on delicate, beautifully textured Japanese Wa-shi paper that verifies its limited-edition status. Complete packages of this caliber, featuring a low serial number and paperwork, are increasingly difficult to find on the open market.
